Tamilrockers was created in 2011 and is a website that enables users to watch pirated movies. Usually, these films are new Bollywood, Hollywood Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Punjabi films that are leaked every week on their website as soon as the film is released.
With TV shows and web series becoming increasingly popular on television channels and online streaming sites, also these are now available on Tamilrockers for illegal download in 2020.
The Indian government has blocked Tamilrockers because piracy is illegal in India, but the website stays online as it regularly updates its extension of the domain name and can even be accessed through proxy pages that direct users to the website.
Three Tamilrocker-related persons were arrested in March 2018. In May 2019, more members of the Tamilrockers were also arrested in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.
Downloads on Tamilrockers movies damage the film industry's profits as the content owners are not paid as users of these websites do not visit the theatres to see the movies available on Tamilrockers.
Over the years, Tamilrockers have leaked several blockbuster films on the first day of their release. In recent years, on the internet, films like Baahubali 2 and Dangal have been hit with leaks. The film industry, according to estimates, losses of around $2.8 billion annually due to illicit downloads.
Indian internet users are estimated to be the second-largest population worldwide using unauthorised torrent websites.
The government has taken definitive action to eradicate video piracy. Anyone found filming a film without the written permission of the producers will face a prison sentence of up to 3 years in compliance with the Cinematograph Act approved in 2019.
In addition to this, the culprits will also be charged ~10 lakhs. A prison sentence will also be met by individuals circulating pirated copies on unauthorised torrent websites.
