YouTube is an American online video sharing site based in San Bruno, California. The service was founded by three former PayPal employees-Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim — in February 2005. Google acquired the website for US$ 1.65 billion in November 2006; YouTube is also one of Google's subsidiaries.
YouTube enables the user to upload, access, rate, share, add playlists, track, comment on content, and subscribe to other users. It provides a broad range of user-generated and corporate media content.
The material available includes video clips, TV show clips, music videos, short and documentary films, voice recordings, movie trailers, live streams, and other services such as video blogging, short original videos, and instructional videos.
YouTube and chosen creators are receiving commercial revenue from Google AdSense, a platform that targets ads based on web content and audiences.
The vast majority of its videos are free to watch, but there are exceptions, including subscription-based paid channels, film rentals, as well as YouTube Music and YouTube Premium, digital platforms providing premium and ad-free music streaming, and ad-free access to all content, including exclusive material commissioned by popular celebrities.
